The body sat on top of the autopsy table, the soft tissue had already been stripes from the bone. All was silent is the Jeffersoian lab in Washington DC, the day had still to begin...it was only five am. The dim lights of the lab flickered softly and a faint buzzing filled the cavernous building. Suddenly the lights went up, the buzzing ceased and hot air rushed into the building, warming the guest from the cold snow outside. Washington DC could become freezing, everyone drove with their windows firmly up and the central heating blasting as high as it would go. As they walked along the icy streets their breath rose in clouds before them and they had to be careful not to slip. You could not see anyone without scarves, gloves, hats and extremely thick socks. Even the body, which now sat warming steadily on the table, had been covered in frost when it had been brought in. For some bizarre reason, the organs had been kept for further inspection and were neatly stored.
But this person who had entered was no guest. She walked up to the remains as if she owned the place. She unwound her scarf from her neck and pulled off her gloves. She surveyed it, squinting at every inch of the body. A piece of paper lay next to the body with her name on it, holding her breath, she delicately took it, opening it slowly she read.
Bones,
For god’s sake, leave it till the rest of the squint squad get there!
Booth
Doctor Temperance Brennan laughed and folded it up, putting it safely in her pocket. She left the body and collected her things and moved over to her office. She fell into her chair and switched on the computer staring blankly at the screen. What on earth was she supposed to write this time! She needed to get a new book going and she had no idea what to write about, never mind a title. Did it have to have the word ‘Bone’ in it? If not, ‘Checkmate’ might be good. She sighed, forget the title, and start on the story line. She grabbed a piece of paper and began to work on storylines. The world seemed to spin around her, time flew by as did people and she was jogged out of her thoughts four hours later by a tall woman putting her books down hard on her desks.
“Sweetie, Cam says you were here when she got here at seven, now how long have you been here”
Temperance jumped and sighed “Ange, I couldn’t sleep so I came here”
“You didn’t answer my question”
“Fine, four hours”
“You’ve been here since five am!” Angela screeched “Don’t you sleep? You must be super human honey”
Temperance grinned “AS if Angela, there’s no such thing” she looked around “IS everyone here?”
Angela sighed in exasperation “yes, I...where are you going!” Temperance had got up, pulled on her lab coat and was heading out of her office, she turned and called over her shoulder
“Booth said I couldn’t work till everyone had got here!”
Angela rolled her eyes and gathered up her books, “Why do I bother” she muttered in defeat and hurried out after her.
Temperance was standing over the remains once more, ignoring everything that was going on around her. She picked up the skull and turned it round, “The bullet entered the head at the front of the cranium here” she pointed to a small hole in just above the point that was between the eyes, “But there’s no exit wound” she turned the skull around “But you can see the start of one here” at the back small cracks centred around a small point that was in line with the bullet hole. Temperance pulled out a pair of tweezers, delicately she put it through the eye socket, “Got it” she murmured and gently pulled, the bullet came away easily and she placed it in a small metal tray. “Hodgkins, I want you to go over the victim’s clothing and Angela cold you do a facial reconstruction”
“I’m on it!” Jack called from the other side of the lab
“Sure, if you promise to get some sleep tonight” Angela said, walking past Brennan and whipping the skull of the table.
Brennan rolled her eyes “I’m not promising anything” she called after her. She got to work, carefully surveying the remains. When the phone began to ring she ignored it, let someone else answer it. Jack watched her carefully before sighing in defeat and picking it up.
“Hello?” he frowned “She’s busy at the moment I....” he stopped again and looked slightly frightened. “Doctor Brennan it’s for you, and he won’t wait”
Brennan saw the fear in his eyes and was filled with a foreboding as she took the receiver from him, lifting it slowly to her ear. “Hello?” she said confidently
“Ah Doctor Brennan, so good to speak with you” a rasping voice filtered down the phone, a man’s voice.
“Look, I’m busy at the moment, can’t it wait?”
“Ah, yes I know. He has a bullet hole in the front of the head doesn’t he?”
Brennan gestured wildly to Jack to tell him to record the call “Yes, who is this”
The man ignored her “And it can’t wait Brennan, neither can your daughter”
Brennan felt her hands begin to shake “What do you mean?”
“You know perfectly what I mean Doctor Brennan, drop the case or she gets it”
“I don’t...”
“Oh stop lying Doctor Brennan!” The voice became very angry “You’ve abandoned her before; you wouldn’t leave you to her death would you?”
“I did not abandon!”
A laugh came down the phone “Stop lying Doctor Brennan, drop the case or your daughter gets it. Understand?” then there was the dialling tone.
Dropping the phone as if it had stung her, Brennan felt the shield she had constructed collapse.
