I've done a sequel, those who want to read it just say and I'll post it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Go on then, kiss your girl!”
Brennan felt her chest tighten, they were undercover, a murder had been committed about three months ago and she and Booth had been on the case ever since. It was hard enough last time, but now they were actually being asked to… no, Booth wouldn’t really kiss her would he? She was so confused over her feelings for her partner, there were times she could ring his neck but over these last few days things had been really different. But she still felt uncomfortable around him sometimes.
She was jerked out of her daydream as she heard it again; “What you waiting for? Kiss her!” There was no getting round it, she didn’t realise she was holding her breath. Booth leant toward her; his eyes were warm, if a little nervous as he leant to kiss here. As his lips touched hers everything faded around her. It was just her and Booth in their own little world. She felt his arms go around her and she pressed against him. When he broke away she didn’t want to let go. But the men were gone.
“I’m sorry Bones” he mumbled, clearly embarrassed, “That was inappropriate I…” Temperance pressed a finger onto his lips and shushed him softly and leant to kiss him again.
Booth stirred, how long had he been asleep? He turned over and found himself staring into the face of his partner. He smiled softly, at last! Her auburn hair fell around her shoulders and the early morning sunlight flooded through the windows. He took her hand in his and traced small circles with his thumb. “Morning” he whispered and she smiled serenely. “Morning” she mumbled, snuggling closer to him. They stayed like that for a long time until Booth’s phone rang. His face broke into a huge boyish grin. “They caught him” he said “They caught the son of a b!tch”. They’d successfully completed their investigation, but what now? He looked over at Brennan who looked into his eyes.
“I don’t care” she said softly “All I care about right now…is this” she lay her head on his chest. Everything seemed perfect…for now.
Brennan laughed as she pushed back her chair; good times, and good food! Booth stared at her and it wasn’t long till she started to feel uncomfortable. “What?” she asked, her piercing blue eyes shining in the candlelit room.
Booth pulled back, breaking his gaze “nothing” he said, flashing her a cheeky look. Brennan looked at her watch; every evening for the past three months had been like this. They were taking it slow now and she loved every second. Her day went in a set structure; get up and out of the house before Booth wakes up, work at the lab, lunch with Booth (secretly of course), then more work until an evening meal with Booth until they fell into bed. Brennan smiled, there was no case at the moment, everyone was used to Booth’s comings and goings but she needed to work for her new novel. Then it hit her, her manuscript was lying on her desk in the lab. “Uh Booth, I forgot my manuscript” she began, but Booth was un his feet. “Right then my lady” he crowed, “let’s go get it then” he took her hand and ran out into the street and bundled her into the SUV.
Angela was confused, ever since Booth and Brennan had solved that case everything had changed. Before, there had been a little spark between Cam and Booth, as well as Bren and Booth; but now something had changed. Booth wasn’t interested in Cam anymore, he really wasn’t interested. He hardly ever spoke to her and joked more with Zach then Cam. She didn’t know whether to be happy that the only spark that remained was between her best friend and her partner, or sad for Cam as she really did seem heartbroken. She’d tried to bring up the subject with Jack but he only said to talk to Doctor Brennan, and when she did…Brennan just didn’t want to hear it. So, she was going to do something about it. Maybe, just maybe, she’d find out what was going on. Hours earlier she’d positioned herself inside Brennan’s office (it had the best position to watch). Her eyelids dropped and she yawned and it was then she heard it, the swipe of Brennan’s card as she ran up the stair into the lab. She watched as Booth followed her, perhaps they had a new case, but she hadn’t been told. Her eyes widened as Booth leant down and kissed Brennan’s neck; Angela covered her mouth as a squeak of pure glee escaped. Brennan slapped him away with a warm smile Angela hadn’t seen before. Brennan turned and started toward her office, Angela’s blood turned cold, best go for the cool approach. She leapt up and started toward a chair where she could sit and raise and eyebrow coolly from. She tripped and fell just as Brennan walked into the room, followed closely by Booth. Angela’s cheeks acquired a pinkish glow as she started at them but it was nothing compared to Brennan’s furiously scarlet face. Angela though desperately of a think to say but the only words that escaped her lips was an “Um…hi sweetie”. There was an uncomfortable silence, which ended as Booth began to laugh, Angela joined in nervously and soon the two were laughing hysterically. But Brennan stood, not saying a word.
“I don’t see what’s so funny” she said incredulously.
Angela waved her hand over the two of them and grinned, tears of laughter seeping down her face. “It’s the whole Ross/Rachel relationship” she cried
“I don’t know what that means” Brennan began as Angela swept her up into a hug. But Angela only laughed,
“I hope you’ll rub off on her Booth”
“How can someone rub off on another, what does that mean?” Brennan began as Booth started to pull her away.
“We’ll tell you later, come on Bones let’s go, see you Angela” Booth said quickly as he and Brennan left the office as Angela waved, getting ready to go home. Brennan stumbled as a wave of nausea hit her; she needed to check this out. But not tonight…soon.
No, this wasn’t happening. She’d wake up now and laugh and her dream, though in reality it was a terrifying nightmare. She was sitting in her bathroom, the pharmacist bag discarded on the floor; the plastic casing thrown haphazardly into the bin but the paper wafted as a breeze came through the window, ‘clear blue pregnancy test’. Brennan looked up and threw the test into the bin with the casing, though the result could still be seen, as bold as ever. Positive; she was pregnant. But she wasn’t far along; maybe it would be best to terminate the pregnancy? Booth would never forgive her…But she wasn’t ready for children yet, it would ruin her! But the child would be beautiful…
Brennan tried to clear her thoughts, to think clearly. But it was as if a fog had fallen upon her and however hard she fought it wouldn’t clear. She couldn’t tell anyone, not even Angela…And certainly not Booth, not yet anyway. She pulled herself together and got up, quickly getting ready and pulling on a coat before walking quickly toward her car. Turning on the ignition she looked at the clock, 6:00 am, great. She stopped for a moment and placed her hands on her belly, though she knew there was no chance she would feel it moving just yet. Suddenly she realized what she was doing, her hands left her stomach like they’d been shocked and she quickly placed them on the steering wheel and started to drive. She wound down the window and felt the early morning breeze fly through her hair. Driving always made her feel good, she didn’t know why Booth never let her drive. She smiled for the first time that day, no traffic; good. She approached the Jeffersonian and parked with ease, moving in one fluid movement out of the car. She walked through the gardens, the grass wet with dew and through the doors, no one was here yet. Taking on her coat and putting on her lab one she sat down at her desk and loaded her manuscript, then she closed it again, not now, she work on it later. Quickly she waltzed out of her office and back to the lab where Brennan was reassembling British skeletons from the Victorian era. As well as driving, this also had a calming affect on the anthropologist and before Temperance knew it, four hours had past.
“Sweetie!” Angela flew to meet Brennan “And where is your hunky boyfriend hmm?”
“I haven’t seen him this morning” Brennan said coolly, straightening a vertebrae Angela had dislodged. She seemed distant, and cold today, even more than usual.
“Have you two had a fight?” Angela asked, moving closer to Brennan “Sweetie, you know you can always tell me”
For a strange reason, Temperance found herself fiercely fighting back tears “Everything’s fine” she said, a little higher than she’d intended. Coughing, she finally mumbled “I better get on with my manuscript” as she swept out of the room, leaving a confused Angela, with a feeling something was dreadfully wrong.
Almost at the same moment Booth walked into the lab, tossing a coin in his palm, up and down, up and down, each time it fell Angela could feel herself getting more and more worked up. “What have you done to Brennan” she said quietly, and from the look of confusion on Booth’s face, she could tell he had no idea.
“I…I don’t know what you mean Angela” he said in confusion.
“Just go talk to her” Angela said, gathering her things “Something’s up, and if she won’t talk to me, she’ll talk to you” and with that, she left.
Booth stood there in confusion, what was going on? Following Angela’s advice he found Brennan in her lab, working on her book.
“Hey” he said nervously, worried by the coldness in her eyes and how tense she seemed.
“Hello Booth”
She continued typing, not looking up. Booth watched her, his confusion mounting. “Is everything alright”
“I’m fine”
“Bones…”
“Don’t call me Bones”
That did it for Booth “Something’s wrong Temperance” he could see her irritation growing.
“Nothing’s wrong Booth, now leave me alone so I can work”
Booth leant toward her and lifted her head with a finger under her chin and looked into her eyes. “Tell me Temperance, something’s up” she looked pale, but her eyes burnt with a cold fire. She pulled away from him as if he’d burnt her.
“Nothing’s wrong Booth” The emotions raged inside her as she looked into his deep, chocolate brown eyes. For a moment she wanted to tell him, but no, she was going to face this alone. No one should help her, she’d keep the child, but she’d do it alone. Booth already had a child and she highly doubted he wanted another, especially when their mother was like her. Despair clouded over her, making the fog seem like water, she was drowning in it. She closed her manuscript down without saving, she hadn’t done anything anyway. She avoided Booth’s gaze as she gathered her things and made for the door.
“I don’t believe you Temperance”
“That’s fine with me”
Booth looked as if he’d been stung by those words, his brown eyes hurt and he wringed his hands in his lap. Temperance gave him a last cold look. And with that, the anthropologist was gone, leaving her partner, boyfriend and father of her unborn child sitting on her desk, watching her as she went.

Almost three more months had past since the day Temperance had completely shunned Booth. She didn’t see him much after that, no cases, no contact. She was harder, always filled with this terrifying anger that often reduced Angela to tears. No one knew about the child. Brennan had kept it hidden and everyone was scared of her; so no one asked what was going on. Angela was keeping in contact with Booth but, like the others, he was also scared of her, but one day Angela cracked. Picking up her cell she stalked around the lab after her and Brennan’s latest ‘spat’.
“Booth, its Angela”
“Hey Angela, what’s up?”
“You NEED to talk to her”
“Angela, I don’t…”
“If you don’t you’ll be sorry Booth, she’s impossible. I know you didn’t have much luck last time but…”
“Fine, fine! What should I do?”
“Don’t tell her your showing up, she’ll leave or tell you she will, you still have your key right?”
“Yes, but I don’t know”
“Booth! Bring her flowers, chocolates, anything please! I don’t know what else to do; I’ve never seen her like this before”
“Fine, I’ll try but I’m not promising Angela” he paused “is she alright?”
Angela sighed “I don’t know Booth, I really don’t know” and she flipped her cell shut and walked into Brennan’s office. “Sweetie, don’t you think its time you went home” she said softly
“You don’t need to tell me what to do!” Brennan shot at her “I’m not a child”
“Well you’re acting like one!” Angela raged “All the time you’re throwing snide, horrible comments! It’s like you’re an animal, always so angry. Or is it fear Temperance? What are you so afraid of? Is it Booth, he was the best thing that ever happened to you and now you’ve pushed him away; you’re mad Temperance Brennan, completely mad” With that she stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
“Angela” Temperance called after her “I’m sorry” she said softly. She grabbed her coat and walked out of the lab, noticing for the first time how everyone shied away from her. She kept her head done, what kind of monster had she become? Temperance was a shadow of her former self, her skin sallow and pale and she had dark rings under her eyes. She was suffering from terrible morning sickness and now she understood why Cleo, her second case with Booth, hadn’t wanted to get up in the morning.
Arriving in her apartment she picked up a ginger snap and nibbled thoughtfully. She ate a hurried supper then showered and fell into bed, her tears soaking her pillow.
Booth stood at Brennan’s door the next morning. A box of chocolates was in his arms and he knocked, once, twice, three times. Silence, he sighed and brought out his key and entered her apartment. He was shocked, what had used to be a clean, warm home had gone. Packaging lay on the floor and he could feel the dust covering his shoes. Suddenly he thought she might be asleep. Straining his ears he waited for a noise, then he heard it; a course dry retching, interrupted by a quiet cry. He raced to the bathroom and hammered on the door. “Temperance?” he yelled “Is everything alright in there?”
Brennan jumped, fiercely wiping her tears away she snarled “Go away!” but she didn’t hear any footsteps leaving her home. Angrily she cleaned herself up and walked out of the door and right into booth “Go away” she said again.
Booth was shocked; he’d never seen her look so ill. Her skin was pale and he could still see the tears streaks on her cheeks. She looked lifeless and the dark rings under her eyes had never been so prominent. “What’s going on” he said quietly, but Brennan ignored him.
“I’m going to the lab” she growled and swept out of the apartment. Once she was sure he was out of site she ran her hand through her auburn hair and tried to control her breathing. Her cover had nearly been blown; she quickly made her way to the car and drove off to the lab.
Booth stood in the centre of Brennan’s apartment in confusion. Then he whipped out his cell and dialled Angela.
“Angela?”
“Hey, how’d it go?”
“She’s sick”
“What!”
“I don’t know Angela” he began pacing “Have you noticed how ill she looks?”
“Yes, but whenever I tried to talk to her…”
“I walked in on her being sick”
There was a gasp on Angela’s end as it all fit into place, but she didn’t say a word to booth, Brennan had to tell him. Her mind raced “Look, tomorrow, just go straight in there and don’t let her leave till she says what’s going on OK?” and she disconnected and ran to intercept Brennan who had just entered her office. She closed the door and locked it. “What’s going on Temperance?”
“Nothing” Temperance mumbled, trying to get past Angela but she blocked her way.
“Booth told me about this morning”
“Oh great so you’re all conspiring against me” Temperance muttered “Can I please get out of my own office!”
Angela took Temperance’s hands in her own “Sweetie, being sick in the morning, your terrible mood swings, depression” she smiled “The copious amount of gingersnaps in your office” It was then Temperance knew Angela had guessed and she wasn’t startled by Angela’s next words “Are you pregnant?” Temperance didn’t say anything but she hugged Angela tightly and Angela could feel her nod.
“Yes” she said tightly “Yes I am and I don’t know what to do Ange, I just don’t…” she trailed off as it all came spilling out “Don’t tell anyone please”
Angela looked confused “Booth’s the father right?” Brennan nodded “Then you should tell him sweetie” but Temperance shook her head.
“He won’t want to know, he would want me as the mother of their child anyway”
Angela looked outraged “You’ve been telling yourself this! Sweetie, even if you were three feet tall and with warts all over your face Booth would want to know” she stopped “You are a clever, beautiful woman and with Booth as the father, your kid couldn’t be luckier” Temperance bowed her head, embarrassed. Angela smiled “Come on, I think it’s time the squint squad worked as a team again” and she lead her outside.
Brennan was struck by how much she’d missed the company of her friends, it took a while but soon Hodgkins was cracking jokes and Zach was back on her side, eager to please as always. At the end of the day she felt a whole lot happier, as she drove home that night she contemplated telling Booth and what she was going to say, he would be angry, he had a right to be. But she’d live with it, whether he wanted to know or not. That night she cleaned, the dust disappeared and the wrappers were returned to the bin where they belonged. She shopped, getting proper food instead of just gingersnaps, which had become her craving. At the end of the day she felt tiredly happy. Though she knew the morning would bring sickness she felt relaxed now. She turned over in her bed and closed her eyes.
Booth was back at the door, a single rose in his hand now. His mind was racing and he couldn’t see straight. He was going to find out what was going on, whatever happened. As quietly as he could he took out his keys, fumbling, trying to find Brennan’s. He placed it in the lock and turned it, a quiet click filling his ears. As he stepped in he got ready to be confronted by dirt. But he was surprised, everything was immaculate again. Her manuscript lay on the table underneath a large book. Ignoring the book he took off his shoes so it wouldn’t make any noise. He placed them were he always had and padded quietly over to the table. ‘Break no Bones’, good name. He leant down and lifted the first page ‘dedicated to Special Agent Seeley Booth, I don’t know what I’d do without you’. Instead of a warm glow, Booth felt cold. This must have been typed before she’d completely shunned him (in fact it had been typed last evening). It was as if he was undercover, placing the rose on the side he tiptoed over to the bathroom door. He heard it again; the dry, painful retching and he felt his heart go out to her. He opened the door and saw her crouching there, tears streaming down her face as she retched again. He made his way over to her and gathered her hair out of her face. Holding her shoulders and murmuring comfort to her as she cried. He expected her to fight him, but she seemed too tired for that. When it was over he helped her to her feet, wiped any sick from her mouth and gave her water to wash her mouth out. Then he gathered her in his arms as she continued to sob. He’d missed the feeling of being her protector and rocked her back and forth. Not yet, don’t question her yet, savour this feeling. He stroked her hair as she snuggled into him; they stayed like that for a long time. “Bones?” he said softly.
It seemed to break the spell and she pulled away from him and walked a little farther off. “Why are you here Booth” she said quietly, moving a pile of gingersnaps closer to cover the spine of the book ‘Pregnancy, what to expect’. She noticed the dedicated page of her manuscript was showing and realised Booth must have seen, she blushed but all it did was add a tiny amount of colour to her cheeks. She looked into Booth’s eyes and almost melted right there on the floor. She met his gaze, the wonderful soft gaze and let all of the breath go out of her. She then realized Booth had said something. “Sorry what?” she said
“I came to see what’s wrong”
“Nothing’s wrong Booth I told you that”
Booth walked toward her and took her shoulders, like he wanted to shake her “What was that Temperance? Nothings wrong? Then what did I walk in on hmm; you’ve got to tell me”
Temperance turned her head away, even though she had decided to tell him it was so hard “I…I can’t”
Booth’s face hardened he picked up hi cell and flicked it open “Hey, yes Cam it’s me…listen, yes I know we need to talk but not now! I rang to say Doctor Brennan won’t be in today. Don’t start Cam” and he flicked his phone shut. Then he walked straight passed Brennan ignoring her outraged gaze and locked the door and stood in front of it. “Now” he said slowly “You’re not leaving till you tell me what’s going on”
*Oh not again* Brennan thought, and then she began “How much do you love Parker?”
Booth looked confused but said “I’d die for him, why…”
“Would it make a difference if his mother was a” she paused “Workaholic who” she could feel the tears rising “whenever she finds something that would threaten her career just runs away. Shunning the people she loves for three months and trying to cope on her own” he voice rose “No matter how much it hurt or how hard it was, even though it’s bound to get harder because in a few months she’ll have a crying baby that will end up like her, alone and with no family apart from its mother. And you wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t locked her in her own apartment and” she let the tears slide down her face “Made her stay off work and put a rose on her table” she had her back against the wall and slid to the floor “I’m a terrible person” she cried “A terrible person who doesn’t deserve you” and she put her head in her hands and sobbed.
Booth stood there, stunned, going over everything she had said * No matter how much it hurt or how hard it was, even though it’s bound to get harder because in a few months she’ll have a crying baby. And you wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t locked her in her own apartment * Then it clicked “Oh Bones” he said softly, sitting down beside her and gathering her in his arms “your not a terrible person, you’re just confused” he lifted her tearstained face so her watery blue eyes met his. “I love you, and nothing’s going to change that”
“Even a baby” Temperance murmured, her face inches from his.
“A baby” he paused “Will make no difference except” he paused and smiled “I be to tired to say it as much”
Brennan laughed tearfully “Really?”
“Really” and he gathered in into another hug.
Brennan soon found she was crying again “These damn hormones!” she muttered and Booth laughed.
“Where are those chocolates I bought you?”
“In the fridge” Brennan mumbled as Booth pulled her to her feet, hurrying over to the fridge and bringing them out. Sitting her down easily on the coach where she snuggled into him.
He opened them and handed the box to her “Life is like a box of chocolates” he quoted “You never know what you’re going to get”
“I don’t know what that means” Brennan mumbled, her mouth full of chocolates “All I know is that I prefer ginger snaps”
Booth laughed, “Ok, instead of the expensive chocolates I’ll buy you ginger snaps”
Brennan smiled but then said “Booth?”
“Mmmhh” Booth was scoffing the chocolate and nodded.
“Why aren’t you angry? I didn’t tell you I was expecting your baby”
“I know you Bones, you were scared it would ruin you; then you didn’t want to lean on me” he looked at her “Lean on me Bones ok?”
Brennan didn’t say anything; just wiped a trace of chocolate from his mouth, nothing else was needed. “I love you Booth” it was the first time she’d ever said it and Booth’s heart swelled with joy.
“I love you to Bones”
She laughed, “You’re lucky I still love you after you call me that”
“What?”
“Bones”
“Talking to yourself is the first sign of madness Bones”
Brennan punched him on the arm “That’s not funny!” but Booth continued laughing. Then he said,
“Bo…Temperance, how far gone are you?”
“Nearly three months, I found out the day I…” she stopped. Booth nodded understandingly and before she could say anything kissed her deeply. When they broke away she was smiling again and he felt stupidly proud of himself. “Booth” she said quietly, about to voice her fears “Did you…see anyone else when we were apart?”
Booth shook his head “Never” he muttered “After you Bones, no one was quite the same” It was Brennan’s turn to hold Booth’s face in her hand and she kissed him lightly on the lips. She looked at her belly and laughed,
“I still can’t believe I’m going to be a mum” she said quietly
Booth hugged her “I know Bones…I know”

Brennan opened her eyes as the early morning light filtered through the shutters. She could hear the sound of bird song and as she squinted through the shutters she could see trees moving quietly with the breeze. Looking at her clock she noticed the time; 7:00am, that was good for her. She smiled, looking over to Booth, who still lay fast asleep. She was six months pregnant and loving every second, the morning sickness was gone. She looked radiant, with just a little neat bump. A smile flickered across her face as Booth mumbled in his sleep and threw him arms off to either side. Then she felt a tiny flutter in her stomach. She giggled and nudged Booth. “Booth” she said quietly and he opened his eyes and groaned.
“What time is it?”
She ignored him and took his hand, “Feel” she said quietly and placed his hand on her bump. He looked confused and opened his mouth to say something but she placed a finger on his lips. “Shhh” she whispered and they lay there for a few seconds before the flutter came again. Booth’s face broke into a huge grin and he yawned.
“Now that is worth getting up for” he said quietly, and kissed her lightly before getting out of bed. Soon the smell of coffee consumed her and she followed him, leaning on the wall as she watched him in the kitchen.
“Now that’s just mean” she called, savouring the smell if nothing else. Booth grinned and took a very long sip then he sighed in content enjoying Brennan’s infuriated look. He padded over to her and handed her a camomile tea which she sipped, eyeing him jealously. She stretched stiffly, she’d been having some bad backache but she’d done her googling. Today they would look for some pregnancy pillows before going to the scan. “Nervous?” she asked, she didn’t know about Booth but she’d been worried about the scan, she didn’t know why, nothing seemed to be wrong; maybe it was just the maternal instinct kicking in.
Booth watched her and put his arm round her “No” he said softly, “But you are aren’t you” when she nodded he gave her a one arm hug. “You’ve got nothing to be worried about if the little girl was moving so much this morning”
“And what makes you think it’s a girl?”
“Ahh I don’t know, guessing. We could find out if you want to”
Brennan shook her head “I’d prefer if we didn’t, I like guessing”
Booth nodded, “So do I” he could tell something was up “What’s wrong Bones?”
Brennan sighed; she’d given up long ago “I’d like to go and see my dad, to tell him”
Booth understood, when he’d told his parents they’d been over the moon. “Ok Bones, but we don’t know what he’s reaction is going to be, he might not be over the moon”
“I don’t know what that means”
Booth laughed “go get dressed, I’ll sort it Bones”
A few hours later Brennan and Bones were making there way toward Max Kennan, they were separated by the bars of his cell and just before they reached there Brennan turned to Booth, he could see the fear in her eyes. “I don’t think I can do this Booth” she whispered.
“Tempe? Is that you?” she heard her father call and looked at Booth again, trying to show her desperation.
Booth pushed her forward a little and whispered “I’m here Bones, it’s all going to be OK” he lent down and kissed her, taking her hand in his. They broke away, realising they were in full view of Max who watched with a raised eyebrow
“I see you’re more than partners with my daughter Agent Booth” he said, enjoying watching the couple squirm.
“Dad” Temperance brought up a chair and sat facing him, Booth behind her, his hands placed protectively on her shoulders. “It’s great to see you”
“Yes, it’s not like I can come and see you since your boyfriend put me in here” Max said, leaning back.
“Dad, please…”
“I’d prefer if you didn’t upset Temperance Mr Kennan” Booth cut in, “In her condition…”
“What do you mean her condition?” Max said quickly “Is something wrong Tempe?”
Temperance bowed her head; it had been gone rather fast. Gathering her thoughts she raised her head again. “Booth and I have been…together for nine months” she said, her voice becoming stronger and more confident.
“I guessed that…”
“And six months ago I realized something was wrong, not with our relationship, but with me”
“What have you done to my daughter Booth?”
“Dad please! So I went to the local pharmacy and from there I found…I found I was pregnant” she watched nervously as her fathers face turned from anger to shock, then to anger once more.
“You got my daughter pregnant Agent Booth”
“Yes sir”
“Are you sorry?”
“No sir not at all” Booth squeezed Brennan’s shoulders and continued passionately “I couldn’t be happier, everything’s perfect”
“Are you going to marry her?” he watched, enjoying once more watching the couple squirm and Brennan blushed violently
“We haven’t talked about that” Booth said finally, “But I wouldn’t not get married”
Max nodded and reached through the bars and took his daughter’s hand in his own “I’m happy for you temperance, congratulations”
Temperance smiled “Thanks dad” she glanced at her watch
Booth took the hint “I’m sorry Mr Kennan we’ve got to go” he grinned “We have a doctor’s appointment”
Temperance kissed her fathers hand and got up to leave “Bye Dad, I’ll come and see you again I promise” and Booth put his hand in the small of her back and guided her out.
Later, as they sat waiting for the Doctor to call them in she said softly “thank you”
“For what” Booth said, looking around the empty waiting room
“For not…you know”
“Yes, I know Bones”
Brennan sighed and looked around “How long you think this is going to take?”
Booth looked at his watch “It can’t be long now”
Brenna moved closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder, just as the doctor poked his head around the door “Doctor Brennan and Agent Booth?”
“Here” the two said in unison, standing up and taking hold of each others hands. The doctor smiled, it was good to see a couple so in love. He gestured for them to come inside and they did as they were told. Brenna climbed nervously onto the bed; Booth stood at her head and crouched down beside her so they were level.
“Right then I’m Doctor Funnel and you are” he looked at him notes “Doctor temperance Brennan and Special Agent Seeley Booth” he paused and smiled “Congratulations” he got out his equipment “Now this is going to be cold” and he smeared a freezing jelly like substance on her stomach and Brennan sucked in her breath sharply.
“You weren’t kidding” she laughed.
Doctor Funnel smiled and started moving the probe and soon a grainy picture came onto the screen. Brennan tightened her grip on Booth’s hand and felt the tears come. “It’s Ok isn’t it, our baby’s fine”
Doctor Funnel nodded, “Everything seems in order, do you want to know the sex?” The two shook their heads and Doctor Funnel nodded “Ok then, right” he pulled the tape they’d been watching from the screen and handed it to them. “Congratulations and good luck, we’ll be seeing you soon”
Later as they drove to numerous toy stores, Brennan fingered the tape and smiled demurely. Toys, a crib with pink and blue sheets, a pregnancy pillow, soothers and baby books crammed the back of the SUV. Booth laughed at her.
“What?” she said, confused
“You, I never thought this would ever happen”
“neither did I Booth, but I always hoped”
“So did I”
“We were so blind”
Booth leant over and kissed her quickly “Yes” he murmured “We were”
As they, well Booth, carried everything to the apartment, Brennan contemplated how lucky she was. She had the man of her dreams and soon would have a child of her own. The rest of the day was spent decorating the room. “Right!” she yelled above ‘Hot-blooded’ because you think it’s a girl we’ll put pink sheets on the crib”
“Poor kid if it’s a boy”
“Changed your mind then”
“No chance!”
Brennan laughed and tossed back her auburn her, eyes sparkling with joy. She let out a sigh of content as Booth wound his arms around her. She turned her face upward and kissed then. After a while they broke apart, breathless, and surveyed her handy-work. “Nice job Booth”
“Yes but they’d be nothing to go in here if you weren’t bringing our child into the world. Brennan nodded absentmindedly. “Are you ok”
“Yes, I guess” she sighed “No, I’m scared; it’s like someone saying ‘I’m going to come and break your arm, I can’t be exact on time, but it’s going to happen’”
Booth took her head in his hands and said “But I’ll be there all the time OK, I won’t leave you, I promise” Brennan nodded, putting complete trust into the man she loved with all her heart.

One, two three; Brennan pulled back the sling shot and let lose, smiling in satisfaction as the little black ball hit the cardboard man square in the head, leaving a hole there. She felt her child kick and looked at her belly “That’s enough” she said sternly *Great Bones, talking to your stomach, oh no! Did I just call myself Bones?* she rested her hand on her belly and took aim once more. She took a deep breath and let the little ball hit home, square in the chest.
“Going for the Bart Simpson look?”
Brennan spun round and saw Booth, leaning idly against the door frame and watching with amused brown eyes. “I’m not even going to ask what that means” she turned back and let another lose. Pretty good aim for someone seven moths pregnant. She grinned in satisfaction.
“Ouch, don’t let me see you angry” Brennan dropped the slingshot and turned to kiss him, her pregnant belly made it hard for her to move and Angela still wondered why on earth she was still here. As they broke apart she smiled,
“You know, I can’t wait for this to be over”
Booth looked confused “What?”
Brennan smiled “This” she waved a hand over her bump “It’s so uncomfortable, I just want to get it over and done with”
“Ahh” Booth looked distracted
It was Brennan’s turn to look confused “What?”
“We’ve got a case”
Brennan’s eyes shone with anticipation “That’s great, when do we start?”
Booth shook his head “No way Bones, your staying in the lab”
Brennan’s face darkened “Just because I’m pregnant Booth, I can still take care of myself”
“Bones you can barley move”
Brennan grabbed the slingshot and let lose three shots, each hitting the same place on the cardboard man; then a gun, four in the same place as the black balls and two in the chest. “Yes, I can’t take care of myself” she said angrily.
“Bones, you didn’t have to move for that, your aims good”
She glared at him, “Right, so I’ll sit here and do nothing”
“That’s right”
She said nothing and walked straight past him, trying to muster as much dignity as a seven month pregnant woman could. “This isn’t the end of it Booth”
They argues bitterly for the rest of the day and Angela watched, half in disgust and the other in awe; how could they keep it up for so long? She leant over to Hodgkins and whispered “Do you think we should do something?”
“No” Hodgkins answered back quickly
“And that is because?”
“They both scare the h3ll out of me” and with that he turned back to his slime.
Angela moved over to Zach, “Zach?”
Zach closed his eyes and recited “Doctor Brennan and Agent Booth’s life is no business of mine, I shouldn’t get involved as it would only make it worse”
Angela rolled her eyes and placed her hands on her hips as the men fled “Your both cowards!” she called after them, she sighed and looked over the balcony and watched the two argue.
“I’m not a child Booth!”
“Well, I’m sorry, but you seem to be carrying one around 24/7!”
“And whose fault is that”
“Guys!” Angela called to them “Guys!”
“Well it certainly isn’t mine”
“Who said I wanted this in the first place!”
Angela inhaled sharply and she could see Brennan’s legs almost give way beneath her as she grabbed something for support. “Oh no” Angela muttered and started to run down to Brennan who was staring at Booth with watery blue eyes.
“No sorry Bones, I didn’t mean that”
“I was right” Brennan whispered “You don’t want me or this baby” Angela was by her side immediately, she glared at Booth; he never seen her look so angry.
“Bones…”
“Leave it Booth” Angela said darkly, “I’ll take her home” and she steered Brennan quickly out of the lab.
Booth turned round to see Zach and Hodgkins staring at him “I screwed up right?” he said and was surprised by the look of anger they both gave him as they turned their backs.
The drive back to Brennan’s apartment was silent as Brennan stared blankly out of the window. When they finally got there she walked her up to her apartment and into her room, sitting her down at the table she looked at her, “Sweetie?” Brennan looked away and Angela took her hand “Bren?”
“I knew it” Brennan said finally
“You need to let your emotions out sweetie”
“No, crying lets him win”
“Who said I needed you to cry?” there was a long pause and then she said “He didn’t mean it sweetie”
Brennan snorted in contempt “It sure sounded like it”
Angela sighed “Sweetie, we all say things we don’t mean when we’re angry, look at you…”
It was Brennan’s turn to sigh “Um Ange, I’d kind of like to be alone tonight”
Angela nodded and hugged her “I’ll be round tomorrow, take care of yourself” and she moved to the door, looking back once before leaving.
Brennan kept her body tense; she ate a hurried supper, not bothering to clear up and moved off to bed. She lay there for a few hours until she heard the click of the key and Booth’s footsteps. She stayed perfectly still and a few minutes later he slid in beside her. “Go away” she snarled. She felt him move away sharply, then a rustle of blankets from the spare box. Then the creaking of the couch as he climbed onto it in the living room.
Booth tried to get comfortable on the couch, geesh, Bones was all about the style in her apartment but it could at least be comfy. He hadn’t meant what he’d said; he wanted the baby more than anyone. It had come out because of fear, he didn’t want Bones to get hurt, it would kill him; and if hurting her was the only way…he’d do it. Then he heard the sound of crying, pure gut wrenching sobs. He waited for five minutes but the sobs grew more desperate, punctuated by a wheezing gasp for breath before they started again. He couldn’t bear it; hurrying into her room he gathered her in his arms and shushed her. “Its ok baby, I’m here” she stroked her hair “I didn’t mean it honey, I was scared, I don’t want to lose you” he paused “Or the baby, we’re going to get through this aren’t we”
Brennan hiccupped and tried to control her ragged breathing; she nodded and snuggled into him. After a while she whispered “Does that mean I’m in on the case”
Booth held her at arms length, “You don’t give up do you?”
Brennan shook her head “I promise I’ll be careful, first sign of danger and I’m out of there I swear”
Booth raised and eyebrow, “Even I know you wouldn’t do that Bones”
“I will I…I swear on, what do you swear on…the bible!”
“Bones you don’t believe in God”
“I’m starting to”
“Fine”
They stared at one another and Brennan smiled, trying to consume her triumph. She moved over, allowing him into the bed. As they snuggled together Brennan smiled, no way would she run if Booth needed help, wow she was good.
They slept for a long time, exhaustion had consumed them. Back at the lab everything went as usual, only with a bit of worry for Booth and Bones, shared by all except Cam who couldn’t help feel a little smug, she wanted Seeley for herself, and no one else. She liked Brennan, but she like Seeley more. She thought hard, Brennan could be like Rebecca, mother to his child, old flame but nothing else, she’d make sure of it. After a while Angela stopped doing the many facial reconstructions she was doing and stretched. “Look, I’m going to see Brennan, I think Booth went round to hers last night” Hodgkins scowled.
“I hope he had to beg”
Angela smiled, noticing Cam’s scowl and just to annoy her said “They’re a sweet couple and they love each other, they’ll get through anything. Love like that” she paused and looked straight at Cam, “Doesn’t fail, no matter how hard people try to break it” she felt a deep satisfaction as Cam turned and stalked away, her clacking heels being heard a long way off. She laughed quietly “And I won’t let them break up” and she turned to go to her car, and off to Brennan’s apartment.
As she entered all was quiet, dishes in the sink and a couple of blankets and pillows on the couch, not a good sign. She treaded lightly across the wooden floor, it was midday, there was no way they could still be asleep. As she reached Brennan’s door she said a silent prayer and opened the door. It creaked quietly and she peaked her head round the door, expecting it to be abandoned, scattered sheets and pillows, the works. She was wrong; as her eyes grew accustomed to the dark she made out two figures, huddled close to one another, their breathing in time. A large mound in the bed indicated it was Brennan, Angela had never seen a bump like it. And the man, Booth, no one could snore like that. She stifled a giggle; everything looked good. She closed the door and let out a sigh of relief. Leaving a note on the table ‘glad to see everything worked out’ she left the apartment. Glad she had a first hand account of something that would really irritate Cam. Soon the fun would begin, a child of their own; and the two partners would at last be a true family.
“Right Bones, this is what we have; the murder weapon was a 9 millimetre pistol, from the hair found on the body we can guess he has brown hair”
Brennan picked up “Possibly thirty from the witness accounts”
“And her ex boyfriend”
Brennan grinned at him, “Let’s go”
Booth grinned back and accelerated he turned to face her “Remember your promise Bones” he reminded her
“Mmmm” Bones mumbled, looking out of the window
“I mean it Bones”
“I know Booth, but let’s focus on catching the murder” she felt her cell vibrate and struggled to get it, being eight months pregnant made it harder to move than usual. “Brennan”
Angela’s voice was heard on the other side “Ok, his name is Kevin Saunders, he lives at 42 Goldway Avenue” there was a pause “Be careful sweetie this guy isn’t nice, he’s on probation for robbery and attempted murder” Brennan shuddered,
“Ok thanks Ange” she swiftly closed her cell, if she told Booth everything she had heard she would probably not be allowed to go with him so she leant back and said “42 Goldway Avenue” The car moved faster.
As they crept toward the house Booth made sure Brennan stood behind him, he could see movement in the house he knocked once, twice, three times. “Mr Saunders?” he called. Silence, “This is the FBI open up!” as if he had caused a chemical reaction a large bang filled his head and he spun round. A man stood behind him, his long dark brown hair stood on end and his dark eyes were full of a dangerous fire.
“Don’t move” he growled softly, “Or your girl gets it” it was then Booth realised Mr Saunders was holding Brennan close, his nine millimetre pistol pressed to her head. One shot would kill her and his baby, the two most important things in his life. Brennan looked at him, terror in her blue eyes.

“Ok” Booth slowly placed his gun on the ground “Look, just let her go” But he could see the look of delight the man had, he swayed Brennan from side to side. “Enough!” Booth yelled, panicking rising steadily. The man chuckled,
“This way Agent Booth” and he started to drag Brennan toward a little hut, he basically threw her inside “Go get her Agent Booth; I’ll be gone by the time they find you.” He sneered; “If, they find you” he heard Brennan’s cries of pain and knew he had to get her. He made his way slowly into the hut, just at Saunders made to slam the door Booth swung round and fired to shot. A yell of agony told him he’d hit, his cries carried on for a while, then silence. He’d dealt with the murder, but for what price?
He raced down to Brennan who was lying sprawled on the floor then he realised the drop, he fell freely before landing awkwardly. Gasping in pain he crawled toward her “Bones!” he rasped
“I’m here Booth” she whispered “I’m here”
As Booth looked up he realised how deep down they really were, a small shaft of light came from the high ceiling above. Saunders must’ve dug a cavern, once you were down you couldn’t escape, and with a steady supply of air they’d die slowly. He moved and cradled her in his arms. “It’s going to be okay” he murmured. Then an idea struck him, he whipped out his cell, no signal and a tiny amount of battery. He took a run at the wall and leapt, higher. A signal! Clinging on for their lives he hit speed dial, the lab. Angela’s voice once again could be heard “Angela!” he yelled “Get over here please!” he felt his grip slipping, “We’re in the” a beep cut him off and he slipped, falling hard and he yelled in pain. He swore and looked at his bleeding hands. Turning stiffly he saw Brennan had pulled her against a wall and was propped against it. She was very pale and sweat stood out on her forehead.
‘Pain, just pain; oblivion and darkness; control it, force it away. No, let it over come you, slip into the darkness. Booth’s voice; what does he know of pain. Nothing, nothing at all; here they come again, try and breathe; no scream, let it out, let him know you suffer for his doing.’
“Bones!” Booth dropped to her side as she screamed, he took her shoulders “Please Bones listen!” she pushed him away, her breathing ragged and uneven. He noticed a large gash in her leg as it oozed blood. He tore off his shirt and wrapped it tightly around her leg and the blood stopped a bit. But she still continued to writhe, “Bones!” then it hit him, he’d seen this before, the desperation, the pain, the terror. Rebecca; that’s was it. He clutched her shoulders…
‘When will it stop; the pain, the anger; who intended this for me? All my life, pain; but not like this; ongoing, constant. Why doesn’t he be quiet, he thinks he knows you; he is so wrong.’
“Bones!” he shook her but she was limp, a rag doll that tore out his heart with each moan of agony. “Think of your dad, Russ, your mother, Angela!” he listed everyone he knew Brennan loved as family “Hodgkins, Zach, Me! Agent Seeley Booth Bones; and our baby” he felt the tears reach his eyes. “Our little baby, the rooms all ready Bones, I just need you to get through this.
‘The pain pushes its way through your body, you feel it; a jet of fire from your head down to your feet. Feel it burn; it might be your last. Clench your teeth. You’re stronger than this! Eyes fly open, to bright; close them. Push the pain away and breathe, breathe…’
Booth watched her eyes open and shut and he knew the inner turmoil going inside. He hadn’t experienced what Brennan was going through but he could imagine. He rubbed her back and felt her relax slowly. He moved by her side and whispered in her ear “No Bones listen to me, I want you to push the pain away, like we talked about remember?”
‘Push the pain away, do as he says. How it hurts! But no sound escapes your lips. With each push the pain lessens. I can’t do this; no, I can’
Booth busied himself around Brennan as he tried to bring his child into the world “Come on Bones!” he yelled “I know you can do this”
‘Look at the fog, out in the horizon. Isn’t it beautiful? But it seems so far away…if you follow it you might be able to touch it…follow the fog.’
Brennan’s eyes cracked open “I c..can’t Booth”
Booth looked at her “You can Temperance, you can!” he watched as Brennan threw back her head and screamed.
‘Your voice, how far away…’
It all happened in a rush as Brennan’s cries lessened Booth found she’d done it. A piercing shriek of outrage filled the small cavern and a tiny baby floundered in Booth’s arms. He laughed, choking back tears “Bones” he whispered softly.
All in a flash everything came back into focus, the fog was gone. The beautiful light, everything. She looked at Booth and saw the tiny baby, and then she burst into tears. Sobs wracking her body as Booth sorted out their child. Then he handed it to her and she felt as if the sun was shining down on her, warming her weak body. She leant against Booth and felt the tears fall and onto her child’s face. “A girl” she whispered, cradling her.
Booth looked up, it wasn’t his imagination; the hole in the top of the cavern was getting bigger. Sunlight spilled onto the family, a weak and pale Brennan and an equally tired Booth, their daughter lay in Brennan’s arms, kicking her legs and staring at the world with blue eyes.
“Brennan!” Angela’s face appeared. Her eyes widened and she turned and yelled “Get some people down there now!”
Crying filled the apartment and Brennan groaned, getting ready to climb out of bed. She felt hands on her shoulders press her back onto the bed, “I’ll get her don’t worry” Booth mumbled and she felt his warm body leave the bed. A little while later she heard mumbling “Shhh Lizzie, its Ok daddy’s here” the screams disappeared and then she recognised a tune, ‘edelweiss’ from the sound of music. Brennan smiled and pulled herself out of bed, she ran a hand through her hair and padded into Lizzie’s room and watched quietly as booth moved around, Lizzie clutched to his chest as he sang quietly. She moved quietly behind him and wrapped her arms around his neck and sang along with him. The stars twinkled outside and the night was perfect.
“Mom, I’m back!” A tall girl of about 14 strode swiftly into the lab, throwing down her school bag. Angela stood on the balcony and called “You know, when a girl says that in the same tone of voice as saying ‘Mom I’m home’ something’s wrong” Lizzie grinned,
“Sorry Angela!” she called and was immediately blown over as two children of about 4 burst out and hugged her around the legs. Lizzie laughed “Hey guys!” she said softly, looking at the two; the girl had long dark hair and startling blue eyes, the other had blonde hair and deep brown eyes. “Angela! Lucy and Robert are down here!” she called. Angela swept down and bundled them into her arms,
“Isn’t Zach supposed to be looking after you?” she cooed to them and moved back down the corridor.
Lizzie looked around for her mother, her dark auburn hair falling around her shoulders and her blue eyes danced. She spotted her bent over another of the World War II skeletons and picked up her bag and headed over. “hey Mom” she said quietly, careful not to distract her mother but she needed have bothered, in one swift movement Brennan turned and hugged her daughter before turning back to the remains.
“Hey sweetie, have any homework?”
Lizzie groaned “Yeah loads!” Lizzie had Brennan’s full attention “I have, art” Angela poked her head round the door, “Chemistry” followed by Hodgkins “And Math!” closely perused by Zach. “Not to mention this English piece but I’ve already done it” Lizzie whined.
“Can I read it?” Brennan asked, Lizzie might have a full scholarship to her high school but Brennan like to check her work.
Lizzie shook her head, “I want to see what my teacher thinks first” she said, “I’ll go and work in your office right?”
Brennan nodded and as Lizzie ran off she said to the three “Fine, you can check her work, but show it to me first” and they scattered.
Lizzie groaned, pulling out her art book and flicked through the pages, Angela taught her how to draw when she was tiny and each little drawing had an ‘A’ beside it. ‘Draw your family’ the teacher had said. Lizzie frowned; she caught Zach looking at a skeleton and drew him leaning over a table. Her mother leaning over him, checking his work and Booth with his arm round her waist. Angela was at the side of the picture grinning at the two with the twins at her feet playing with bricks and Hodgkins watched them as he squatted down to play. Cam was nowhere in the picture, she rarely talked to Lizzie, let alone her father. She squirmed; best not show her this picture. Finally she drew herself with her parents smiling up at them. Just as she finished Angela flounced in “Hi sweetie…” she paused, pretending to realise what Lizzie was doing “Are you doing art?” she leant over and studied the picture and smiled “It’s beautiful Lizzie” she got a pencil, then put it down “there’s nothing else I can do to it” she hugged her, “Can I get a copy of this” Lizzie nodded, embarrassed, Angela pulled the book and went off to the copier.
“I didn’t mean now!” Lizzie called after her and sighed brining out her next book, Chemistry. She worked silently through formulas and igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock questions. It wasn’t a long before Hodgkins shuffled in.
“Have you seen the twins?” he asked
Lizzie gave him a look that was so like her mother, she knew what they all were doing, she passed him her work “here” she said sarcastically, “It’ll save you a lot of trouble”
Hodgkins grinned sheepishly and scanned it “Good, good, good!” he placed it back down. “All right!” then he walked out again.
Lizzie couldn’t help but laugh; she knew exactly what was going on. Pulling out her math book she worked solidly for three hours, doing at least double what she was supposed to. Zach found her fast asleep on her books and looked embarrassed as he slipped the book from out beneath her; he also checked the answers and rubbed out the last question before walking out. Brennan passed him as he was walking out and smiled at him. As she opened the door she smiled softly and covered her daughter with a blanket. She leant over and pulled the English work out of her bag ‘Who inspires you’ the title said ‘If I had to chose a person in my life who inspires me the most, who makes me feel proud to be myself, would be my mother Doctor Temperance Brennan; forensic anthropologist and writer’ As Temperance read she could feel tears grow in her eyes, the amount of praise her daughter heaped upon her in this 600 word essay was amazing. She felt an arm slide round her waist and wipe away her tears and she turned and kissed him. Her Booth; her true love. She handed him the paper and snuggled into him. Booth’s eyes scanned it and he felt his heart swell with pride. “She’s right you know” he said softly and kissed her forehead.
Lizzie opened her eyes sleepily “Daddy?” she said tiredly
“Hey princess” Booth kissed Brennan’s cheek before leaning down to hug his daughter “Good day at school?”
The child prodigy nodded into her father’s arms and when she looked up she said “Lilly has a crush on Parker” and she burst out laughing.
Brennan grinned, slipping the paper quietly back into the bag , they’d all had some good times, the handsome eighteen year old Parker included; he was truly the heartthrob of the decade for these young girls.
Booth laughed “Well tell him that” he said jokily. He was ecstatic his daughter was a people person, so much like him in that respect. They’d been a period in her life when Bones’ profession had…well, made it hard for Lizzie to make friends, but that was over now. He took his daughters hand and wrapped his another arm around Brennan “lets go home girls” he called.
Later that night, when Lizzie was fats asleep in her bed Brennan blurted out “I don’t know why she wrote that”
Booth looked startled “Why not Bones?”
Temperance looked at the ground “well, I’m not exactly the coolest mom on the planet”
Booth smiled “Bones, you fight crime for a living, you identify those who people would never know about if you hadn’t been there” he paused and laughed “You’re a best selling author with seven awards to your name” he smiled and hugged her “You’re a pretty cool mom”
Brennan smiled and kissed him “I still can’t believe we’re so lucky” as Booth stared at her he noticed dark circles under her eyes.
“What’s the matter Bones”
I’m fine, I’m just getting nightmares” she said bluntly
Booth lifted her head with a finger “About what?” he said quietly
“Every time I close my eyes I imagine I’m back there” she said shakily “With this…indescribable pain and I’m about to give up” she was shaking “And I really think I’m there Booth, it feels real!”
Before she could carry on Booth pulled her into a hug, “Why didn’t you tell me” he said softly, he rocked her back and forth, “You won’t have any tonight, I promise” he kissed her them, a deep romantic kiss. She smiled at him and yawned. “Bed” he said quietly and pulled her upright.
She nodded “Just let me check on Lizzie” she said, making her way over to her room. She stuck her head round the door and saw her daughter curled under her thick duvet, fast asleep. “Night” she whispered and closed the door. Now it was Brennan’s turn for bed, but first, she really felt like a gingersnap.
